Our Commitments

At Pengelly Farms, our mission is simple: to grow high-quality food in a way that protects and preserves the environment around us

We believe that the earth is our greatest resource, and that with responsible stewardship, we can provide the community with healthy, sustainable, and delicious food. Our commitment to environmentally friendly practices ensures that our farm remains a model of conservation and sustainability.

The Environment

Protecting the environment is incredibly important to us – a healthy field means a healthy crop, and we actively work to leave fields and soil in as good or better a condition than when we started work.

This includes measures such as returning soil from potatoes to its original field, and recycling the plastic sheeting used to encourage potato growth. We also take steps to reduce our pesticide usage, protect soil with cover crops over winter, and plant cover beneficial to nesting game birds too.

We are also working to increase our use of renewable energy sources, with solar panels powering our cold stores, and the biogas from our AD plant being used to generate electricity which is used on and off the farm.

Along with biogas, our AD plant also produces digestate, which is made from locally produced and sourced crops, and materials such as waste potatoes. This is a concentrated form of organic matter, which we use as a highly-effective natural fertiliser to reduce our reliance on artificial fertilisers.

Elsewhere, we engage with Environmental Land Management (ELM) schemes such as the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI), to manage well-developed hedgerows and support biodiversity.

The Community

We take pride in being an integral and engaged part of the local community, actively supporting local charities and opening our farm to visitors who wish to learn more about agriculture, sustainability, and the joy of farm-fresh produce.

Every month, some of our potatoes go to support local food banks, providing quality, nutritious vegetables to families who need them.

Our AD plant also has a significant positive impact on the local community, as the biogas it produces is used to generate electricity and can power 1,000 homes.

Our People

At Pengelly Farms, we are committed to providing safe and supported employment for our workers, both seasonal and permanent. We hold quarterly employee forums, provide onsite housing and facilities, and use trusted, accredited providers for recruiting agency staff and seasonal workers.

Additionally, we make use of local firms and contractors wherever possible, to reduce travel miles and further support the local community.
